Chevron
SecureNet has worked with Chevron since 1998; and Texaco since 2000 until the merger with Chevron in 2001. The first Chevron project involved the replacement of all access control systems in Chevron-owned real estate in Texas and Louisiana. This initial project had two major challenges. The first was a requirement for minimal downtime as the existing systems were in use and Chevron did not want the facilities unsecured. SecureNet developed and refined our ‘hot swap’ methodology at this time, and the lessons learned from this project guide our ‘hot swap’ retrofits to this day. The second challenge was the desire of Chevron for every employee to have access to the perimeter of each site, even though each location was a ‘standalone’ system with no interconnectivity. The manufacturers in the access control industry at the time did not offer this functionality, so SecureNet’s software development team wrote a custom application to capture, merge, and re-distribute each personnel database on a nightly basis. The resulting product, known at the time as ‘Super Server’, allowed a cardholder to be present in each stand-alone system within 24 hours of badge issuance.
Our first involvement with Texaco was incredibly fast-paced. We were initially contacted on a Friday afternoon, and requested to meet at Texaco’s New York headquarters the following Monday. During the meeting, which took place in late August 2000, we were given the opportunity to replace the card access system at headquarters. The issue was the deadline; the project had to be complete and the system fully operational by 8:00AM on October 2nd, 2000. We were tasked with installing a completely new access control system, creating and issuing approximately 1,500 photo ID badges, and ensuring the entire system would operate on Texaco’s network. Through intense planning and careful coordination, we completed the project one week ahead of schedule. This performance won SecureNet the opportunity to replace all remaining access control systems in Texaco real estate throughout Texas, California, and in London, England.
Shortly before the merger announcement between Chevron and Texaco in 2001, SecureNet competed for and won the project to replace all existing access control systems for Chevron on the West Coast. Immediately after the merger, a new ‘One Card’ project initiative was begun, which included a single access control credential that would grant access to ChevronTexaco employees world-wide, and also, through the use of smart card technology, control an individual’s logon to the ChevronTexaco network. Working in partnership with ChevronTexaco’s Business and Real Estate Services division, SecureNet began the task of securely creating and issuing in excess of 75,000 photo ID access credentials, and networking access control systems together across the world. The system today operates in North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe, and is one of the largest enterprise-wide systems ever deployed in the private sector.
More than 13 years later we continue to support aspects of this system with Chevron around the globe.
